Dell Inspiron 8600 Review
The beginning of the line, not upper part Weight Class 
We are ready to work FutureMark 3DMark03 test - including all four games simulations, including DirectX 9 capabilities - and now we are seeing Codecreatures DirectX 8.1 works on the picturesque base in 1920 with the 1200 resolution 4X antialiasing enabled. This is not the fastest PC gaming performance we have ever seen, but we are looking at the 7.3 pound notebook.

(9/2/03 update: Although our early tests loaner is the production, rather than prototype block, a few readers who e-mail that Dell order pages list only on-4200. rpm hard drives for the Inspiron 8600, with 7200 rpm-Hitachi disk available. we contacted Dell, and reported 7K60 is new and not enough, but they can be ordered by phone, and that the Web site will be updated as supplies are becoming increasingly rich - Ed. )

It is easier than it looks
In Inspiron measures 10.8 to 14.1 at 1.5 inches, which certainly cumbersome, but its 7.3 pound more comfortable in your lap than many of the 9 - plus-pound leviathans now call themselves lap. (The AC adapter little pieces of 1.1 pounds.)
Beautiful blue accents surround the silver-grey system, keyboard, which is both a pen and IBM ThinkPad-style keyboard with the mouse stick alternatives. Both work smoothly, even though the two mouse buttons for the pointing stick feel a bit soft, but when the stylus feel trifle difficult.
Along with the right edge of the keyboard, when some notebooks stack their start, end, PgUp and PgDn keys, Dell offers a convenient play / pause, stop, previous / next track buttons for CD and DVD use, and turn off the volume buttons above the function keys. Fortunately, the keyboard allows the Home, End, PgUp and PgDn keys, in addition to the cursor arrows, though their placement in the top right is a little used to produce (we found a knife in the upper right-hand corner for the Delete key, which is actually a couple of places inflows ).
Along the left edge of the system, you can find a microphone and headphones connectors, an IEEE 1394 port, and a PC Card slot. Parallel, serial, VGA, S-Video from, 56Kbps modem, 10/100 Ethernet, and two USB 2.0 ports on the back.
In Philips SDVD6004 2X DVD + RW drive, which also serves as an 8X DVD-ROM player and 16/8/24X CD-RW drive on the right - and, we were pleased to note, is not simplified and faster reading of a few of our well - worn baseline CDs than DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drives in the past few computers we tested. Pressing eliminates DVD burners and include an optional floppy drive ($ 59) or battery life by another two-thirds from the second lithium-ion pack ($ 129). In Inspiron 8500 configuration page offers a second, 40 GB hard disk for a modular bay ($ 249), but we do not see it listed in 8600.
Even just a standard battery, battery life is not half bad for such a high-powered computer: either a letter or watch a DVD, we regularly received two hours and 20 minutes unplugged operation, the optical storage and hard disk rather busy, and sticking to the top two of Eight screen brightness levels (the rest is rather dark).
